As a healthcare worker, participating in some legislative efforts and processes can benefit both individuals and the organizations for which they work. While there are various benefits, when employees become involved in what may be described as contentious matters among people who do not always share the same opinions, there can be impediments and the danger of reprisal. Because “the playing field for health care is not level; effective policy processes that actively engage important stakeholders are critical,” healthcare policy is required (Weberg et al., 2019, p. 436). The goal of these regulations and procedures is to level the playing field, but this is not always an easy feat. The processes “require patience, time, perseverance, and the ability to form effective and lasting connections,” according to the authors. (Weberg et al., 2019, p. 436). These relationships can assist staff in ensuring that “they understand the issue, the objectives of the proposal, the specific language chosen, and how the proposals fit within existing law” (Weberg, et al., 2019, p. 455).

As long as there is no harm done to our patients as a result of policy changes, there should be no retribution from the institution or people. Change is usually challenging, but it is frequently rewarded with wonderful outcomes. As a registered nurse with advanced practice, it is critical to advocate for and protect our staff in a variety of situations. Every employee has the right to their own point of view, and various viewpoints are the bedrock of this world. We should not retaliate when someone’s point of view differs from ours. As a hopeful future APRN in healthcare administration, schedules, time off, and tasks should not be retaliated against. To avoid retaliation based on race, gender, religion, and other factors, the same rules should be used as they are now. “Spend time with legislative committee personnel so that they can effectively convey the reasoning for legislators’ recommendations as they move forward,” the nurse leader should add (Weberg et al, 2019. P. 455). APRNs must be able to deliver pertinent information to our staff and explain why it is vital.
